Here at Cake and Lace, we think a DIY wedding canopy is a perfect addition to any ceremony or reception.
These are a beautiful addition to any ceremony or reception. They’re perfect for adding a touch of elegance and class to your special day. So, it’s not surprising they’ve become increasingly popular with brides-to-be.
In our experience, a canopy works best in the following four situations (however, there are endless ways to utilize yours- so don’t be afraid to break the mold.):
- Creating a romantic backdrop for a sweetheart table
- Creating a tranquil scene for the exchanging of your vows
- Establishing a focal point for your wedding cake table.
- Adding the wow-factor to your line up/entrance into your wedding breakfast.
If you’re on the hunt for this look (and on a budget), then you’re in the right place!
We’ve partnered with Rent my Wedding, and usually, their DIY canopy rentals cost only $249! This includes the whole kit, 5-day rental, and free US shipping.
So, without further ado, here’s how to set up a DIY wedding canopy in 10 minutes or less – no experience required!
STEP 1: TRIPODS
Firstly, open out the legs on the 4 tripods. Then place the tripods 10 feet apart to form a square.
STEP 2: CROSSBARS
Now, attach the 4 crossbars to the top of the 4 tripods.
STEP 3: DRAPES
Next, you need to add the 4 drapes to each crossbar.
STEP 4: RAISE CANOPY
You’re now ready to extend the tripods anywhere between 8 and 10 feet tall.
STEP 5: STYLE
You can now style the drapes however you like. We recommend pulling 2 drapes from each side of the canopy towards each tripod. Then secure them in place with a tie back.
We love these simple, airy fabric-style drapes, they’re fabulous for creating a sophisticated look- sheer class and glamour!
Now voila, you’re done! Step back, and admire your handiwork! That’s all it takes to set up a DIY wedding canopy!
If you want to dress up your canopy, you can add flowers, greens, branches, or lighting.
The beauty of this canopy is that it’s white, so it’s virtually a blank canvas! You can make it as elaborate or as simple as you want so you can do whatever compliments your theme best.
Plus, you can easily attach your decorations to the canopy’s fabric by using safety pins. This is especially handy if you’re looking for a more in-depth design
If you really want to step things up a notch, you could hire a floral designer and make this canopy resemble a gazebo with flowers and foliage delicately climbing up the sides.
One of our favorite ways to jazz up the drapes is to use uplighting. This adds a glow of color (of your choice) to the linen drapes. All you need to do is place one light near each corner of the canopy- it really is as simple as that!

Needless to say, a beautifully decorated canopy will make for fabulous looking wedding photos! Plus (depending on how elaborate your canopy is) you can transport it to your wedding breakfast. This is perfect if you’re hoping to make a grand entrance as husband and wife!
