How to Do Green Cleaning in Your Home

DIY Projects, Sponsored Post / June 17, 2020

Have you ever wondered about what you are getting for your money when you buy the latest and greatest cleaning products from the supermarket? In a lot of cases, the product your spending way too much money on might add some sparkle to your dining room table, but it’s usually at a cost to the environment. NW Maids Cleaning Service founder says using green cleaning products reduces developing asthma.

Sometimes the old ways never really get old, no matter how much the manufacturers want you to believe otherwise. You should also be skeptical about products proclaiming themselves to be green. Some are, but many are just using the claims as a marketing ploy.

It’s possible to keep you and your family safe by choosing a few simple products to do all or most of your cleaning around the home, so here’s how to do green cleaning in your home.

A word of caution before we go further, the products mentioned below may be safer than the commercial products, but you should still practice safety by keeping them out of reach of children.

Baking Soda

Keep a carton of baking soda around, and you will have the basis of many different cleaning products, as well as a gritty scrub that can get rid of tough stains and caked-on grime.

Borax

Borax can be used as a disinfectant, as well as a whitener and deodorizer. You can also use borax as a softening agent in the washing machine, and it’s also a great pest control solution if you have an ant problem.

White Vinegar

Vinegar has so many uses around the home. It makes a pretty good salad dressing for a start, but it’s also regularly mixed with baking soda for cleaning bathrooms and toilets. A little vinegar in the wash will give a deeper clean due to its dirt loosening properties.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is often used as a disinfectant, but it also makes an excellent natural furniture polish when mixed with a little olive oil.

Do This Instead of Using Drain Cleaning Products

Many people will turn to incredibly toxic drain cleaners to rid themselves of clumps of hair or fat deposits in the drainage system. In these cases, prevention is better than the cure, and it’s also easy. Use a strainer to stop hair and other debris from entering your pipes.

Hot Water

If you cook with a lot of fats that make it down the kitchen sink, you should also be pouring a pot of boiling water down there at least once a week. The hot water melts fats and grease, so they can quickly drain away.

There is no end to the ideas on how to do green cleaning in your home. We are sure the above tips will have you covered for the majority of cleaning tasks around the house, but we’re sure you will think of a lot more.
